Event profile:
China Import and Export Fair (originally Chinese Export Commodities Fair), also renowned as the Canton Fair, has been held without interruption for 102 sessions in Guangzhou every spring and autumn since its inauguration in 1957. The Canton Fair has won the reputation of being “China’s No.1 Fair” for its long history, high quality, large scale, the most complete exhibit variety, the broadest distribution of overseas buyers and the greatest business turnover in China. As a state-level exhibition in China, the Canton Fair is co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of PRC and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province. It is organized by the China Foreign Trade Centre. The event has received great government support, and premiers of the State Council of PRC have visited the fair many times. The Canton Fair is ranked as the largest in China and second-largest in the world, featuring over 15,000 exhibitors and a total exhibition area of 635,000 square meters. The Canton Fair combines the traditional advantages of a comprehensive exhibition with the modern trend of a specialized one. It covers a complete variety of products, classified into five categories: Industrial Products, Textiles and Garments, Medicines and Health Products, Gifts, and Consumer Goods. There are more than 150,000 types of products, including not only traditional products from the light, textile and garment industries, but also high-tech and value-added electromechanical products. Export enterprises and products from well-known brands are given priority to exhibit at the fair. The Canton Fair also attracts buyers from all over the world. More than 200,000 professionals, coming from over 212 countries and regions and with different cultures and beliefs, get together in Guangzhou twice a year to exchange information and procure their favorite products. These buyers represent over 150 retailers out of the world's top 250. Compared with other exhibitions in China, the Canton Fair ranks the first in terms of business turnover. Each year, the fair's two sessions generate a turnover of over US$6 billion combined. It is regarded as “the weather glass and vane of China’s foreign trade.” The International Pavilion of the 101st session of the Canton Fair covered an area of 10,000 square meters. Over 1,700 exhibitors from 314 enterprises and 36 countries and regions participated in the fair, including 11 enterprises from 7 of the least-developed countries. The exhibition space of the 102nd session of the Canton Fair was enlarged into 15,000 square meters, attracting 480 enterprises from 57 countries and regions, including 17 enterprises from 9 of the least-developed countries. Although the International Pavilion has only existed for two sessions, it has demonstrated enormous potential and attracted great attention from overseas governments and commercial and industrial organizations and enterprises, and the exhibitors were satisfied with the achievements gained by participation. Boasting reliable exhibitors, professional buyers and various exhibits of good quality, the Canton Fair not only provides the exhibitors with a platform for upgrading brand images, exhibiting the latest products and meeting new clients, but also offers buyers a great opportunity to learn about the market, grasp trend and engage in face-to-face communication with suppliers.
