Games to the Gamers: Trade Show for the Masses
One way to understand the culture of an art form is to attend its festivals. Film festivals, for instance, usually celebrate the cult of celebrity; parsing which stars attended which after-parties can be as important as the movies themselves. Rock music festivals, by contrast, tend to live up to their mandate for sweaty inebriation. Fine arts, classical music and opera gatherings have spent centuries cultivating a mood of finely mannered erudition. As for television, Americans celebrate it not in public but at home on the couch every night.
