Staying Up-to-Date with SEO

I recently spent the weekend with my nephews and they were excited to play a game they made up with me. Some rules made sense and some took a while to get a handle of, and of course the minute I thought I had it all down and was playing fierce and having success, I hit a roadblock. It was a new rule—that they forgot to tell me (or just made up)—and to move to the next level I had to comply.

This is often how I feel about SEO. I start getting into a grove with keywords and best practices only to find out the rules and algorithms have transformed. I am sure that I am not alone with this feeling. Looking for some advice I recently connected with my colleague Rich Hein, as he spends a lot of time on the nuances of SEO in addition to his day job on the CIO.com editorial staff, and he graciously shared some of his favorite sites and blogs that outline SEO changes and best practices. Since we are in this together as marketers, I thought I would share his recommendations and my favorite recent posts.

Search Engine Land: Everything you need to know about SEO delivered on Thursdays

The Moz Blog: The industry’s top wizards, doctors, and other experts offer their best advice, research, how-tos, and insights—all in the name of helping you level-up your SEO and online marketing skills

Google Webmaster Central Blog: Official news on crawling and indexing sites for the Google index

  • Do you wonder, how to make your Content “Crawlable?” Google recently shared a post with best practices and don’ts including the use of canonical URLs, design for multiple devices and more.

If these posts seem too daunting, or you want a full refresher on search engine optimization (SEO) basics, you may want to check out Hubspot/OnPage.org’s recent guide to SEO.

So just like the game I played with my nephews, the rules may change, but having insight into the changes may keep you a step ahead. Is there a blog/blogger that you rely on to stay in the know on SEO? Please tweet us your recommendations @idgenterprise. We look forward to staying in the SEO game with you.
