Australian Inkjet Printer Market is Feeling the Squeeze, Says IDC

NORTH SYDNEY – APRIL 3, 2003 – Inkjet printer shipments saw a 4% decline for the fourth quarter of 2002, down from 210,972 units in Q302. This decline has been the result of the traditional quieter fourth quarter period, the increased push on colour lasers and the price war that has recently begun on the inkjet multi-function devices making them the hot product of 2002.

There was however growth on a fourth quarter year-on-year comparison, which saw the market grow by 65.7% from 191,287 units in Q401 to 202,339 units in Q302. End-of-year figures saw a 6.8% growth in shipments from 777,382 in 2001 to 830,506 in 2002.

IDC Analyst, Katina Goussetis, claims that, The Australian inkjet market is really starting to see the implications on the introduction of the multi-function (MFP) inkjet machines. It is not only colour laser printers that have been taking away market share for the inkjet printer market, now it's also the MFP's.

We have all witnessed the inkjet printers that were as cheap, if not cheaper than the cartridges, this aggressive price-cutting will continue to see single-function inkjet printer shipments remain steady, while comparable price on the inkjet MFP's will see them gain greater market share.
