Channel Support Buoys Latin America’s Desktop Printer Market In Q2 2002, IDC Says
MIAMI, FL – SEPTEMBER 5, 2002 – Desktop printer vendors have been working closer to strategic channels in the second quarter of the year. As economic indicators remain pessimistic for Latin American countries, the best alternatives have been to take advantage of financial incentives and printer model innovations. Large retail chains became convenient channels for users in such challenging times.
A total of 1.28 million inkjet, laser, dot matrix, and solid ink desktop printers valued at US$252.0 million were shipped in the region in the second quarter of 2002. This represents a nearly 11% decrease in units and an 18% decrease in value.
"Product mix is driving competition and vendor distinctiveness in the marketplace. Now it is even clearer that consumers are well informed about printers' features and they know what they want to purchase", said José Rubens, Research Analyst for IDC Latin America. Where to buy them is equally important, "channels which can offer credit services and appealing promotions are preferred by both vendors and customers" Rubens added.
Overall vendors' positions did not change; HP remained leading the regional printer market. In the inkjet printer market, Lexmark and Canon had strong positioning in the lowest price band. In the laser printer market, Lexmark gained more than 6 percentage points in regional unit market share in Q2 2002 over the same period in 2001 and led the printer market in Chile for the first time. Epson solidified itself in the dot matrix market as the leading vendor gaining almost 11 percentage points in Q2 2002 over Q2 2001.
