CIO Magazine Tech Poll Reveals Momentum in Mobile App Investments
IT Leaders Embrace Next Waves of IT Innovation
Framingham, Mass. – December 19, 2013 – IDG’s CIO—the executive-level IT media brand providing insight into business technology leadership—releases the CIO Magazine Tech Poll results for November 2013 (click to Tweet). According to the poll, a majority of IT leaders plan to increase IT spending in the next year across multiple edge technologies.
Results from more than 200 top IT executives reveals that organizations, on average are seeing an overall increase of 5.2% to their budgets in the coming year, with an investment focus on enabling business process innovation. Aligning with this business objective, IT leaders continue to allocate more of their budget on edge technologies, particularly, mobile apps (58%), tablets (55%), business intelligence and analytics (54%), and cloud computing (51%). Currently, 52% of enterprises are researching or piloting mobile apps, with an additional 23% already producing a mobile app for their business unit or division.
“IT budgets have steadily grown as technologies continue to drive innovation and efficiencies within organizations,” said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief, CIO magazine and events. “Mobile has the ability to increase engagement and response between employees as well as with customer interactions. IT is constantly looking at investments and resources to align with business objectives.”
With a growing budget, IT leaders are actively researching new solutions. Software defined networking (SDN) is a new area that IT leaders have a growing interest in trying to better understand the benefits. Currently, 37% of respondents are actively researching SDN solutions, however, almost half (46%) are not interested in the technology. On the flip side, coordinating with mobile app investments, 36% of organizations are actively researching enterprise mobility management and 44% are piloting or have a solution in production.
When responses are trended from January 2010 to now, there is a clear growth pattern from when respondents reveal that a technology is on their radar to when it moves into production at a business unit, division or enterprise-wide. For example, in January 2010, 51% of organizations had cloud on their radar and only 12% had cloud initiatives in production. Fast forward to November 2013 and 39% have cloud on their radar and 58% have moved into production. The swing is even more accelerated with server virtualization initiatives that went from 28% on their radar and 42% had initiatives in production in January 2010 to 9% and 72% in November 2013, respectively.

The CIO Magazine Tech Poll is conducted twice a year, among heads of IT, to gauge which technology areas are the focus of IT in the coming year and to measure the direction of spending within those areas. The current CIO Magazine Tech Poll was conducted between October 15 and November 5, 2013 through the CIO LinkedIn Forum, CIO newsletters and email to CIO customers.
