Extended Enterprise Internet Solutions Become the Driving Force for Solutions Integration Demand, IDC Says

FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 21, 2000 — Solutions integrators must aggressively deliver Internet-based enterprise IT solutions to succeed in the next millennium. This is the message of a new report from IDC titled Key Trends and Success Factors for Solutions Integrators in 2000 and Beyond. According to IDC, 1999 was a transition year for the drivers of IT service demand.

"Traditional system integrators must re-invent themselves across a range of dimensions," said Christopher Hoffman, director for IDC's Worldwide IT Solutions Services research. "There are a range of environmental, business model, competitive, and financial dynamics driving enormous change and transition in the IT integration marketplace. Among these, increasing ebusiness and ecommerce initiatives, globalization imperatives, creative mergers and partnering strategies, vertical industry developments, packaged software innovations, and skills pressures will accelerate the need for rapid adaptation to the new market landscape."

The old guard solution integrators with the legacy customer bases have been slow to make the transition, citing difficulty moving from traditional services to ebusiness and eservices solutions. Nevertheless, their customers will demand they make the change, or they will take their business elsewhere.

According to IDC, helping clients think through and redesign their business processes to leverage the Internet for competitive advantage will be an essential characteristic of IT solutions in the new decade.

"Clients increasingly want more than just newer, cheaper, faster technology. They want measurable business value – a business-automation or communications solution that quickly delivers a return on investment," Hoffman said. "Integrators are feeling greater pressure to develop expertise in higher-value-added activities such as IT and business consulting — especially business transformation as it relates to creating a comprehensive, 'click and mortar,' integrated front- and extended back-office business environment."
