Handhelds to surpass notebook PCs in Latin America by yearend 2001, IDC says
MIAMI, FL – JULY 20, 2001 – IDC Latin America projects handheld shipments to exceed notebooks volumes by yearend 2001. Over 680 thousand handhelds will ship in the region this year versus 624 thousand notebook PCs. Brazil will lead the regional handheld growth capturing over half of the region's share by 2003. The winning market for handheld devices in Latin America is principally vertical market implementations where the device is part of a business solution such as data input or sales force automation.
"Internet-capable handheld devices offer an attractive alternative to notebook PCs at a fraction of the cost and weight" said Alexandra Martinez, IDC Latin America IT Hardware Manager. "The strength of handheld adoption in Latin America in the short term hinges on mobility and not on wireless access in which through customized applications complement solutions that require data logging and data access on the go", added Martinez. IDC Latin America forecasts handheld devices to nearly double in 2002 with a compounded annual growth rate of 70% from 2000 to 2005. Palm gripped 80% of the regional market share in 2000, followed by Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, and Casio. Unit market share in 2001 may see more dynamism as HP and Compaq, heat-up their competition.
