Human Genome Mapping Pioneer, J. Craig Venter, and World Wide Web Inventor, Tim Berners-Lee, Headline Keynote Lineup for Bio-IT World Conference + Expo

FRAMINGHAM, MA – January 25, 2005 – IDG World Expo, the leading producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for technology markets and Bio-IT World(TM) magazine, today announced that Bio-IT World Conference + Expo(TM) will feature two of the most prestigious scientists in their respective fields. J. Craig Venter, PhD, president of the J. Craig Venter Institute, pioneered the mapping of the human genome. Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium, invented the World Wide Web. Both will share their unique perspectives on the changing landscape of bio-IT during their keynote addresses. A third keynote speaker will be announced shortly.

Now in its fourth year, Bio-IT World Conference + Expo will take place May 17-19, 2005 at Boston's Hynes Convention Center. Bio-IT World Conference + Expo attracts pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academic, government and life science professionals who come to learn how technology tools for the life sciences can drive efficiencies, create opportunities and increase profitability within their organizations.

Regarded by many as the world's top biologist, J. Craig Venter brought about a paradigm shift in genomic sequencing with his visionary contributions in genomic research. He is the president and founder of the J. Craig Venter Institute, a not-for-profit research organization dedicated to the advancement of the science of genomics, and the J. Craig Venter Science Foundation (JCVSF), a nonprofit support organization for the institute. Venter became a household name for leading Celera Genomics' efforts to sequence the human genome. Also the founder and chairman of the board of The Institute for Genomic Research, he and his team became the first to sequence the genome of a free-living organism in 1995 and, before that, to develop rapid methods for sequencing human genes.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while a researcher at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, in 1989. He wrote the first browser, the first Web server, and the first versions of both HTML and HTTP one year later. TIME magazine listed Berners-Lee in its TIME 100 list of "the most important people of the century." The March, 1999 article stated that "unlike so many of the inventions that have moved the world, this one truly was the work of one man . . . the World Wide Web is Berners-Lee's alone. He designed it. He loosed it on the world. And he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, nonproprietary and free." Since 1994, he has been the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an open forum of companies and organizations that aims to enhance the Web.

"We are thrilled to be able to feature two such remarkable, pioneering scientists at this year's event," said Bio-IT World editor-in-chief Kevin Davies. "Craig Venter and Tim Berners-Lee have absolutely transformed the fields of biomedical research and IT over the past 15 years. It will be a great honor to host them at our conference, and it should be an exciting time for our attendees."

In addition to the keynote addresses, Bio-IT World Conference + Expo also offers a comprehensive educational program, designed to help professionals from major pharmaceutical, biotechnology, government and academic organizations learn about the latest tools, services and training that fuel bio-IT. The Bio-IT World conference program features internationally recognized speakers from all life science market segments including drug discovery, drug development and e-clinical trial research. Conference tracks include:

— Advances in Genomic Medicine

— IT Solutions for Drug Discovery

— e-Clinical Trials and Research

"In just four years, Bio-IT World Conference + Expo has become the definitive forum for how technology advances research, drug discovery and clinical trials," said Elizabeth McMahon, event director, IDG World Expo. "These high-profile keynote speakers underscore the tremendous amount of world-class education that is available for conference attendees. This event is where you will learn about the latest technology developments and research breakthroughs on the complete spectrum of topics involved in drug discovery through market delivery."
