IDC: European data warehouse revenues worth $5.4 billion, says IDC
London — 12/21/1999 — Revenues for the overall European data warehouse market are expected to reach $5.4 billion in 1999, which represents a growth of almost 22% over the previous year, according to latest figures from International Data Corporation (IDC). This figure includes revenues for hardware, software and professional services.
"Despite recent strong growth, not every organization views the implementation of a data warehouse as the most crucial task on the eve of Y2K," said Marcel Warmerdam, Programme Manager for IDC's European Data Warehousing Service. "Y2K and Euro conversion are playing an inhibiting role in this market at least until next year, when we expect healthy growth to resume." During 2000 and 2001 budgets will become available and the external pressures of the ever changing business environment, such as privatization, deregulation, liberalization, mergers and acquisitions and international expansion, will force many businesses to react. In many cases this will mean dealing with the issue of organizing and managing meaningful time-based data from multiple applications within the company via a data warehouse.
* The fastest growing segment in 1998 was the professional services market which with over 30%. This growth rate signifies the trend towards a maturing market and an evolving professional services market for the data warehousing solution.
* The data warehouse software segment also showed robust growth of 26% over the previous year. A compound annual growth rate of 24% for this sector is forecast through 2003.
* The hardware segment of the data warehousing solution set is expected to grow at a slower rate, with just an 15% increase over the previous year. The growing need for storage and processing power will drive sales in this segment and will make up for the strong price erosion of the hardware market in general.
