IDC Forecasts Worldwide eMarketplace Services Spending Will Approach $17 Billion in 2005
FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 28, 2001 – Despite a near-term shakeout among emarketplaces, the emarketplace services industry faces several more years of remarkable growth. According to IDC, worldwide emarketplace services spending will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27%, from $5.2 billion in 2000 to $17 billion in 2005.
"The demand for a full range of consulting, implementation, and operation services has driven stunning growth for emarketplace services," said Leo J. Lipis, Ph.D., senior analyst for IDC’s eMarketplace Services program. "Moving forward, the greatest opportunities for emarketplace service firms will be in integrating participants’ internal systems with those of the emarketplace."
IDC believes the focus of the market is gradually shifting from emarketplaces to participants. By 2005, more than 50% of the opportunity in the emarketplace services market will come from participants in emarketplaces, whereas nearly 85% of the revenue is currently coming from emarketplaces. "eMarketplace service firms would be well served to develop preferred integrator relationships with emarketplaces and to increase their marketing activities directed at emarketplace participants," Lipis advised.
According to IDC, the explosive growth in emarketplace services in North America has reached its peak. However, other regions will compensate for this slowdown. Western Europe and Asia/Pacific, for example, represent the greatest growth opportunity for emarketplace services spending during the forecast.
