IDC Names Innovative Application Development and Deployment Companies Under $100M to Watch, As Software Industry Looks to Cloud Services, Next-Generation Database Products, and Mobile Applications as Revenue Drivers

FRAMINGHAM, MA – October 4, 2010 – In an effort to recognize application development and deployment (AD&D) vendors with revenues of less than $100 million who are adapting and innovating around current shifts in the software market, International Data Corporation (IDC) has identified five innovative AD&D companies under $100M to watch.

"Innovation is a key facet of the software industry," says Stephen Hendrick, group vice president, Application Development and Deployment research at IDC. "Independent software vendors (ISVs) with less than $100 million in revenue are responsible for some of the most original and innovative products in the AD&D market."

To identify the companies to watch, IDC solicited entries from application development and deployment vendors with annual revenues of less than $100 million who exemplified one or more of three key trends in application development and deployment today. These trends, cited in January 2010 as part of IDC's top 10 AD&D predictions for the year, are:

Cloud-based Development and Deployment Tools

* : These tools or platforms must be publicly available but can address any aspect of application development, deployment, or support for the software development lifecycle.Next Generation Database Products

* : This category includes database technology that breaks new ground in either design or implementation. Examples of next generation database products include non-schematic databases, in-memory databases (IMDB), and cell-based storage.Mobile Development and Deployment Tools

* : Mobile application development and middleware is gaining in importance with the advent of smart phones and tablets. This category encompasses a broad range of tools and middleware to support mobile development. Examples include frameworks, translators, testing tools, and widgets.

Companies were judged on these criteria as a measure of their driving innovation in AD&D software. The companies selected in the application development and deployment category are (in alphabetical order):

* Collabnet

* LongJump

* NorthScale

* Pervasive Software

* Skytap

The IDC study, Innovative Application Development and Deployment Companies Under $100 Million to Watch (IDC #225069), profiles each of the five companies based on their exemplification of one or more of the three identified trends. These criteria were selected from IDC's Worldwide Application Development and Deployment 2010 Top 10 Predictions (IDC #222850).

IDC's "Innovative Companies Under $100M to Watch" reports are a qualitative evaluation of a set of vendors within a specific market – they are not a stack ranking nor do they represent an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies in the report. IDC solicited entries from vendors of less than $100 million that exemplify specific key trends (selected by analysts) that are driving change in a specific software market. Vendors submitted case studies that exemplified one of the trends used as the basis for the award. These case studies were evaluated individually and independently by related market analysts across several pre-determined criteria. The case studies submitted for review had to demonstrate that the technology was available, able to be implemented and provided real-world benefits to the customer.
