IDC reports continued growth in EMEA router market in 1Q06

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – JUNE 7, 2006 – The residential segment, which includes wireless routers, declined by 8.7% from $592.3 million in 4Q05 to $541.0 million in 1Q06, but was the largest segment measured in revenues in 1Q06. The decline was expected since in the period 3Q05-4Q05 the residential segment grew by a whopping 49.0%. High-end router sales were up 9.5% from $436.0 million in 4Q05 to $477.4 million in 1Q06; this was the second largest segment measured in revenues in 1Q06.

Cisco's revenue increased by a healthy 10.2% from $533.8 million in 4Q05 to $588.2 million in 1Q06, and its total router market share increased from 39.9% in 4Q05 to 42.2% in 1Q06. Cisco's market share grew even faster when its Linksys division is included; the combined Cisco and Linksys market share grew from 43.3% in 4Q05 to 46.5% in 1Q06.

Juniper, Cisco's archrival in the high-end router segment, continued to grow in revenue in the period 4Q05-1Q06. Juniper's revenue grew by 12.0% from $125.7 million in 4Q05 to $140.9 million in 1Q06. Juniper's overall market share in the EMEA router market increased from 9.3% in 4Q05 to 10.1% in 1Q06. ZyXEL took back the market leader position in the residential router segment, which it had lost in the previous quarter to Thomson.

"The EMEA router market continued to grow in 1Q06, fuelled by strong demand from service providers for high-end routers," said Peter Hulleman, research manager with IDC's European Telecommunications and Networking group.
