IDC’s New Study Puts Software Vendors in Touch with the Developer Community

FRAMINGHAM, MA – JULY 10, 2001 – IDC today initiated a new multiclient consulting study, Influencing the Developer Community: Gaining Developer Mindshare Through Programs and Portals. More than just an assessment of developers, this study provides a complete informational framework for the ongoing management of developer programs and resources. It is designed to help software vendors successfully reach out to the developer community.

 

"Software companies are trying to win the minds and hearts of developers around the world, but their serenades are often falling on deaf ears," said Steve Garone, vice president of IDC’s Application Development and Deployment research program. "Knowing what to say, where to say it, and how to develop programs to reinforce those messages will be key success factors for vendors competing for mindshare."

IDC’s study originated in response to software vendors’ strategic imperative to better understand the developer community. "Businesses can’t manage what they can’t measure," said Steve Graham, IDC’s vice president of Global Software Partnering and Alliances. "Currently, no one company knows where it stands relative to the industry. Consequently, people use imprecise measures to indicate success. Our study proposes to change that."

This study will develop performance measures that detail specific segments and subsegments of the developer community. IDC will further deliver a market map that will help vendors understand which vehicles should be used to successfully market their offerings and messages to that segment.

Findings from IDC’s study will funnel into the Developer Outreach Index. This index will quantitatively measure how developer sites are stacking up.

Specifically, the index will:

· Measure the mindshare of vendor developers sites

· Characterize the "image" of leading sites

· Develop a detailed segmentation of the developer community

· Determine the most and least valuable features and resources of online developer sites

· Identify the additional channels through which developers obtain relevant information

· Evaluate leverage for platform-based vendor products
