IDC’s Third Annual eCommerce Forum addresses profitability in the ‘Internet Economy 2.0’

LONDON, MAY 11, 2000 – At the turn of the millennium, IDC noted that Western Europe had an Internet population of 81 million users. IDC's latest research predicts the region's online population will nearly triple to 215 million by 2003, representing more than half the population; spending will grow tenfold in the same three-year period, from 10 to 125 billion euros by the end of 2003. The driving factors behind this astronomical growth is just one of many topics at IDC's eCommerce Forum which takes place 19-20 June at the Meridian Montparnasse Hotel in Paris.

The eCommerce Forum 2000 is designed to help senior executives take full advantage of the tremendous opportunities offered by the ongoing, on-line revolution. Leading eCommerce/eBusiness players and top IDC analysts will provide a snapshot of the market today and in the future as well as explaining how companies can take advantage of the universal acceptance of eCommerce and profit from it.

"Internet Economy 1.0, which describes the situation until 1999, was all about creating the Internet market and getting eyeballs," said Roberto Masiero, President, IDC EMEA. "Internet 2.0, from 1999 onwards, is about generating value and profits."

In addition to commenting on the market itself, speakers will cover the rise and future prospects of the so-called dot-com or Internet pure-play companies that have based their entire business model on the Internet. IDC's Forum will also demonstrate how more established companies can take advantage of the Internet to supplement their business processes and increase profitability. Further 'breakout' sessions focus on eCommerce from a government, financial, marketing and human resources point of view.
