IDG’s CIO Magazine Names 50 Outstanding Websites

NOVEMBER 30, 2001 – FRAMINGHAM, MA – The December 1 issue of CIO magazine names 50 outstanding Internet and intranet sites in the 5th annual CIO Web Business 50 Awards. Award winners are honored for their sites proven business value, shown by surviving and even thriving in a difficult business climate through innovative ideas and ingenuity.

"During a time when so many websites are floundering or failing, CIO Web Business 50 Award winners are profitable, growing and bucking the trend," says Abbie Lundberg, Editor in Chief, CIO magazine. "By mixing business fundamentals and contemporary ideas, these winning sites prove the web is still an exciting place where opportunity knocks on the doors of companies that get it right."

CIO Web Business 50 Award winners cross a wide spectrum. From government to retail, non-profit to healthcare, banking to the airline industry, each site finds its own unique way to rise above its competitors. The CIO magazine Web Business 50 issue reports what it takes to thrive in this competitive online market and features "Ideas You Can Steal," an inside look into the tactics and practices employed by award-winning sites. Five of the top tactics are:

1. Pick partners that help you serve customers better. Choose allies obsessed with your priorities and limit your number of new strategic partnerships.

2. Revise your strategy frequently. On the web, business plans often have a limited shelf life, sometimes as short as a week.

3. Create an online community with ROI. Encourage visitors by focusing the conversation around something controversial.

4. Think like a customer. When creating a website or devising online products, consider how and why customers use the Internet.

5. Use online games to teach, brand and sell. Games can help build brand awareness and keep visitors loyal to your site.

A complete list of CIO Web Business 50 Award winners can be found below, in the December 1 issue of CIO magazine and on (on or after December 1). Winning sites were judged on a number of criteria including design, ease of user navigation, special features and functionality, and business value. CIO magazine editors, writers and online managers judge the CIO Web Business 50 Awards.
