IDG’s Network World Fusion and The Motley Fool Team on Web Site Advice Column

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – February 5, 1999 – So you want to set up your very own Web site with all the bells and whistles, eh? And you want to do e-commerce, too — because that’s really hot — and publish e-mail newsletters. How will you manage all that content? And what about those forums? Not to mention servers and operating systems and backups and load balancing and all that. And, of course, you want to do all this yourself, right?

To help you with this daunting task, Network World Fusion ( has recruited two top techies from The Motley Fool (, one of the fastest growing Web sites, to share their experiences with you in a biweekly column, Foo’ Bar, that’s ripe with their brand of off-the-cuff humor.

Dwight Gibbs, chief techie geek, and Keith Pelczarski, mad scientist of Fool Labs — the Fools behind the monster site that gets a million impressions a day — will hop onto Network World Fusion to share their trials and tribulations of making The Motley Fool run smoothly. They’ll help with everything from choosing an ISP and selecting a Web hosting platform to design and deployment. All that with a joke or two to boot. And re-boot.

For the past few years, The Motley Fool has built an online empire to help users tackle tough investing problems. The site has world-renowned experts on financial issues and is a Mecca for soon-to-be-savvy investors. Because of this, The Motley Fool has gone through all the growing pains a site can bear.

"We are going to take what we’ve learned building this massive Web site over the years, everything from our screwups to our successes, and impart that experience to Network World Fusion readers in a humorous way," Gibbs said. "We’ve played around with a lot of bits and bytes and learned a lot of lessons along the way."

So why on Earth did these guys name their new column Foo’ Bar? You’ll have to check back on Monday February 8, 1999. Point your browser to Network World Fusion (, the networking industry’s only fully registered (it’s free, though) and audited Web site for Network IS professionals. You’ll never be the same.
