IDG’s PC World Is The World’s Largest Personal Computer Publication

San Francisco, CA; August 23, 1999 – Reflecting its leadership in circulation growth, advertising sales, and editorial excellence, PC World announced today it will increase its circulation rate base to 1.25 million (up 4.2%), once again surpassing PC Magazine to become the world’s largest computer publication. Advertising rates will increase a commensurate 6.0%.

PC World publisher Jeff Edman noted: "Demand for PC World is extremely high. Spring 1999 MRI, for example, shows a 9% increase in the universe of business computer product buyers, and this rate base increase is consistent with that trend. While other computer publications have struggled to maintain circulation, tinkered with positioning, or moved to Web-only businesses, PC World continues to succeed in its long-standing mission to meet the informational needs of its target audience: PC-proficient managers."

The just-released ABC Fas-Fax Report for the six months ending June 30, 1999, shows PC World leading all rival computer publications in average issue circulation growth, newsstand sales, and paid subscriber growth. In addition, the publication delivered an impressive bonus over rate base of more than 25,000, without transfers. Over the last five years, PC World’s circulation has grown by nearly 32%.

In addition, the most recent wave data* for Spring 1999 MRI shows PC World’s average issue audience of 6.4 million surpassed PC Magazine’s by nearly 140,000. In addition, the just-released MRI product data reports that among all measured computer and business magazines PC World reaches the most direct and Internet buyers in the past 12 months.

The winner of more editorial accolades that all other computer publications combined, PC World earned 10 national editorial awards in 1999 alone. Honored with the 1999 Grand Neal Award from the American Business Press, PC World was named a National Magazine Award finalist, and was hailed as the "Best Overall Computing" magazine by the Computer Press Association. In June, MC Magazine ranked PC World #6 in its annual list of the "Hottest IT Media.' Overtaking PC Magazine, which fell to #8, PC World earned MC’s applause for its advertising performance, premium cover price, and strong circulation gains.

The only personal computer magazine to move up in both the Ad Age 300 and Folio:500 rankings this year, PC World has demonstrated solid advertising performance in a challenging market. Since the beginning of the year, PC World has steadily gained market share from its competitors, up from 21% in the January issue to 33% in the August issue. In addition, PC World has carried more advertising than PC Magazine in nine out of the last ten issues, including PC Magazine’s monthly August issue**.
