Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) Wins Big at the annual IDC Asia/Pacific CIO Summit in Singapore

Singapore and Hong Kong – July 28, 2011 — At IDC's Asia/Pacific CIO Summit in Singapore, Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has been conferred the IDC-Enterprise Innovation Awards (Singapore) for its Shipment Optimizer initiative and NOL's CIO Wu Choy Peng wins the distinction of "CIO of the Year". For the first time since its inception, one organization bags both awards.

In its fifth year running, the IDC-Enterprise Innovation Awards gives recognition to companies that are optimizing IT in innovative ways to meet business objectives and are given to one organization per country where IDC's CIO Summit takes place. NOL has been selected from among high-quality entries submitted by Singapore's top organizations.

Optimizing a complex supply chain network is vital in a rapidly changing global marketplace. Attempts to optimize international shipments have previously relied on linear models, which are not sophisticated enough to handle the numerous variations inherent in today’s complex supply chain network.

To meet customers' expectations for greater cost efficiency, NOL supply chain arm, APL logistics, implemented Shipment Optimizer. The technology platform automates the planning process, supports critical decision making, and ensures that shipment planning is optimized at all times according to customers’ requirements.

Shipment Optimizer is the first product of its kind in the market. The intelligent and powerful web-based technology platform uses innovatively designed algorithms to help customers concurrently:

Achieve the best ocean route and lead time;

Maximize container load utilization; and

Optimize shipment costs.

In terms of magnitude, the Shipment Optimizer system is capable of reaching thousands of seaports and cargo airports worldwide.

In an unprecedented dual awards sweep at this year's Singapore event, NOL's CIO Wu Choy Peng has been honored "CIO of the Year" for displaying leadership and an innovative ability to implement technologies to enable a competitive advantage in a hyper-growth, hyper-competitive market. This award is presented to one CIO across Asia/Pacific each year. The winner is selected based on an ability to envision, plan and execute on individual IT strategies within their organizations.

All nominations for both CIO of the Year and Enterprise Innovation were reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges comprising of IDC analysts from various research areas and led by Tim Dillon, Associate Vice President, Asia/Pacific End User and Mobility Research.

“The number of strong entries made the judging process a challenging but enjoyable task. The IDC-Enterprise Innovation Awards is a platform to showcase the technology innovations that have enabled or led the way to the success of organizations. We are delighted to see more and more nominations coming in from enterprises across the region and are pleased to see Neptune Orient Lines win the Singapore award and NOL's CIO win the 'CIO of the Year' award," concludes Tim.
