Network World Reports a 12% Decline in Network Industry Revenues
SOUTHBOROUGH, MA – APRIL 24, 2003 – Network World, Inc. published its annual list of the largest domestic public network companies ranked by revenue. Collective revenues for the Network World 200 companies declined for the second consecutive year—down 12% from last year to $785 billion – but not all revenue pictures were bad. On a positive note, Microsoft (MSFT) landed among the top 10 NW200 companies for the first time, with revenue up 13% to $28 billion.
Ranked from one to 10, the top NW200 companies are IBM (IBM), HP (HPQ), Verizon (VZ), SBC (SBC), AOL Time Warner (AOL), AT&T (T), Dell (DELL), Microsoft, Intel (INTC) and Motorola (MOT).
In addition to the top 200 list, the Network World 200 Issue also honors ten up-and-coming companies with its 2003 10 Start-ups to Watch Award and catches up with the 50 start-ups profiled in the five previous years. Companies earning this year's “Start-ups to Watch” distinction offer fresh approaches for addressing today's enterprise network challenges, from setting up secure wireless connections to effectively storing and retrieving vast amounts of corporate data. Demonstrating that investors are very interested and quite bullish on network technology, collective funding for this year's 10 start-ups is over $391 million.
Collective revenue for the NW200 declined for the second year in a row, dropping from $890 billion to $785 billion. “Market conditions remain challenging for the NW200 and when you consider revenue missing from companies in Chapter 11 – who are ineligible to be included in the NW200 — it's no surprise that revenue and profit pictures have declined. But there are also numerous network companies hanging tough, and reshaping themselves into leaner and more efficient businesses,” said Beth Schultz, editor of the Network World 200 Issue, part of Network World's award-winning Signature Series line.
In fact, the Network World 200 Issue presents an in-depth analysis of three key NW200 network segments – enterprise applications, infrastructure and service providers – that showcases promising new technologies industry watchers believe will secure recovery for each segment.
An interactive version of the NW200 list, which can be sorted by profits, productivity and other measures, and the NW200 Compare-o-Matic, which allows comparisons of any two or more NW200 companies, are available on Network World Fusion, at www.nwfusion.com/nw200/2003.
The NW200 is one of six Signature Series issues published bimonthly by Network World. These award-winning, high profile series provide a comprehensive exploration of the most important issues facing Network IT Executives today.
