Network World To Sponsor “Storage Smackdown” At Comdex Las Vegas

SOUTHBOROUGH, MA – NOVEMBER 12, 2001 – Network World, the leading network news publication, announced today the final line-up of its Enterprise Storage showdown on Wed., Nov.14, from 4-5 p.m.

Dubbed the Network World Enterprise Smackdown, John Dix, Editor-in-Chief, will play ringmaster at this feature presentation at Comdex Las Vegas in the Las Vegas Hilton, Ballroom C. Abandoning the traditional trade show format of a laptop-driven multimedia presentation, Dix will run a lively session with five "heavyweight" storage vendors who will grapple with each other on everything from iSCSI's role in the enterprise to where network-attached storage fits in and the promise of virtualization.

"The wrestling metaphor seemed appropriate for this particular showdown because of the size of the players and the often cantankerous back-and-forth about which storage approach is best," said John Dix, Editor-in-Chief of Network World. "Storage is a huge issue to Network IT Executives these days, so we created a format where vendors will have to use their best high-flying maneuvers to justify their positions, and even more interesting, deflect barbs from their competitors."

The event will be co-hosted by John McArthur, Group Vice President of storage research at IDC. The Smackdown participants will be David Hitz, co-founder and executive vice president of engineering at Network Appliance; Michael Parker, director of technical business strategy for EMC; Brian Truskowski, IBM's vice president of technology and strategy at Storage Systems, Jay Kidd; vice president of product marketing at Brocade; and John Maxwell, vice president of marketing at Veritas.

"The Storage Smackdown is going to be great fun. It's not everyday that you get to see storage industry executives go at it like cats and dogs," commented Dave Hitz "There are important philosophical differences among the storage vendors with respect to technologies like NAS, SAN, Storage Virtualization, iSCSI and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and this is a great opportunity for CIOs and IT managers to understand the issues driving our industry."
