New IDC MarketScape Expands IT Project Portfolio Management Vendor Assessment with IT Financial DevOps, Lifecycle, SaaS and Enterprise Perspectives

FRAMINGHAM, MA – December 10, 2010 – International Data Corporation (IDC) released a new MarketScape report profiling and ranking the leading technology vendors in the IT project portfolio management (IT PPM) market. In this analysis, IDC presents four distinct views of the IT PPM market: IT Financial Management, Application Lifecycle Management, Software as a Service (SaaS)/On-Demand and Enterprise IT PPM. Vendors scoring in the Leaders segment for this view have enterprise breadth, depth across weighted criteria areas, many multi-thousand user deployments, significant high-end functionality for IT PPM suite capabilities, and typically began their combined portfolio approaches sooner than competitors (maturing them over the course of the past 5-plus years). IT PPM suite products from this Leader segment have varied strengths and must be evaluated in the context of key business pain points and drivers for users.

For the SaaS/On-Demand IT PPM vendor assessment, IDC places Attask, Daptiv, Innotas, and PowerSteering in the Leaders category, as they help to drive SaaS adoption and innovation. IDC observes that large IT PPM vendors that have in the past primarily targeted enterprise adoption with on-premise licenses are expanding both their delivery models and their SaaS market presence. Innovative delivery models (e.g., SaaS and on-demand/hosted) play a vital role in augmenting enterprise offerings due to the challenges of IT PPM suite adoption. IDC expects that in less than 12 months all major IT PPM vendors will have SaaS offerings and will move towards IT PPM in the cloud.

For IT Financial Management (which includes integration with IT Service Management), IDC places CA, HP, Oracle, and SAP in the Leaders segment. Driven by an accelerated requirement for more complete and definitive operating details, IT buyers have been actively seeking enhanced tools to help them better manage their operational and financial data. Vendors scoring in the leaders segment for the enterprise view have exceptional, world-class capabilities in one or both areas for ITFM — financial management and/or IT Service and IT Asset Management — as well as enterprise breadth and depth across the weighted criteria areas. Proactive, consistent portfolio, and financial management are critical components in enabling effective execution of business projects — a driving necessity for organizations in the context of competitive pressures, ongoing market volatility, and capital planning and resources that remain highly constrained.

For the Application Lifecycle Management IT PPM vendor assessment, IDC places CA, HP, IBM Rational, and Microsoft in the Leaders segment. Vendors scoring in the leaders segment for the ALM view have the broadest representation of application life-cycle management capabilities and closest coordination between ALM features and IT PPM capabilities.
