PC World Test Center Introduces WorldBench 5
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – AUGUST 10, 2004 – PC World, the most widely-read technology or business magazine, announced the debut of WorldBench 5, the first commercially available version of the industry-standard benchmarking application. It is available now for $249 USD (not including shipping and handling) at www.worldbench.com. Designed to measure the performance of personal computers, WorldBench ratings have contributed to PC World’s award-winning editorial by providing unbiased scores to support reviews and testing from the PC World Test Center. It has been in continuous use for nine years and is regarded as a leading measure of PC performance.
More varied testing has been added to the suite, including multitasking and task-switching tests, strenuous 3D graphics marks, and audio/video encoding designed to stress today’s more powerful systems. Because application-based benchmarking better quantifies computer performance than synthetic methods, many of the routine tasks average users perform are included. The WorldBench 5 suite is comprised of 15 applications. Each application was chosen for its mass-market appeal, stability, market share, and variety:
• ACD Systems ACDSee PowerPack 5.0
• Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1
• Adobe Premiere 6.5
• Ahead Software Nero Express 126.96.36.199
• Discreet 3ds max 5.1 (DirectX and OpenGL)
• Microsoft Office XP with SP-2 (four components)
• Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 9.0
• Mozilla 1.4
• Musicmatch Jukebox 7.10
• Roxio VideoWave Movie Creator 1.5
• WinZip Computing WinZip 8.1
“For almost a decade, PC World WorldBench has been a dynamic tool used to gauge a computer’s
performance,” said Ulrike Diehlmann, PC World Test Center Director. “WorldBench 5 is just another way we differentiate ourselves and demonstrate our commitment to testing based on the way real people use tech products. Congratulations to the PC World Test Center team and all those involved in this project.”
After a simple installation, WorldBench 5 is fully automated and should complete all testing without user intervention. It includes a separate utility that begins running automatically when the suite begins and will perform most of the settings needed to ensure a fair and accurate test of the system. WorldBench 5 deletes the applications as soon as testing is completed. Applications cannot be extracted from the benchmark and contain limited functionality.
Like earlier editions, WorldBench 5 combines the results of scripted application tests and compares them to the scores of a reference system. Because WorldBench 5 uses a completely new set of applications, the baseline system has been updated; scores after the September 2004 issue cannot be compared in any way with scores from previous versions.
