That’s Right, DRM Is an Important Content Protection Technology, According to IDC
FRAMINGHAM, MA – MARCH 26, 2001 – New digital rights management (DRM) technologies are emerging to protect and manage the rights and privacy of Web content. Although DRM is little discussed, sometimes confusing, and somewhat misrepresented in the emerging market, IDC demystifies DRM as an increasingly important content protection technology.
"As the Internet continues to mature as a vehicle for digital content exchange and commerce, the amount of digital content will expand with it," said Joshua Duhl, contributing analyst for IDC’s Document and Content Technologies program. "As this happens, content owners and providers will increasingly require tools and technologies to secure the privacy, access, intellectual property rights, and payment conditions of their content, not only before transmission but after receipt as well. DRM will be a pervasive and necessary technology that will become a permanent and integral part of the Internet infrastructure."
According to IDC, a complete DRM solution includes a number of technologies or services that address the following areas: content security, rights management, content marketing, credentials, financial clearinghouse services, delivery services, and usage clearinghouse services. The completeness of a solution varies from vendor to vendor. "Some vendors provide specific technologies that implement a part of the complete solution, and others provide a more complete or full solution," Duhl said.
IDC believes DRM, while not yet widely understood or used, will become an increasingly important technology for securing, monitoring, distributing, commercializing, and tracking access to any form of digital content – in essence, creating trusted services that bring content providers and content consumers closer together.
