The Internet Still Growing As A Business Sales Channel In Latin America, IDC Says

MIAMI, FL – NOVEMBER 14, 2001 – Despite the abrupt end of euphoria, over 25% of Latin American IT decision makers who participated in a recent IDC survey indicated that their companies currently purchase goods or services over the Internet. According to a new IDC report based on this survey, almost half of the respondents not currently purchasing via the Internet plan to begin by year-end 2002.

"We are encouraged by the signs of growth in eCommerce-related investments in the region," commented Rebecca Wilson, Research Manager for Enterprise Solutions at IDC Latin America. "However, the majority of Latin American companies still appear to be unwilling to rely on the Internet for strategic purchases that are imperative to produce a company's core product or service." In fact, according to survey results, almost half of the companies that currently participate in purchasing via the Internet, make less than 5% of their purchases on-line. Research suggests, however, that companies plan to triple their on-line purchases by year-end 2002.

The security of Internet transactions was listed as the top concern for both companies that buy and that sell via the Internet. "Companies wishing to sell on the Internet must convince potential end-users that their eCommerce site is secure in order to succeed," said Wilson. Despite this concern, the ability to establish additional distribution channels for potential sellers and the availability of greater product/ or service selection for potential purchasers is enticing Latin American companies to expand their investments in eCommerce initiatives.
