Matt Smith

Matthew Smith brings more than 35 years of financial management and media strategy to his role of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Smith is responsible for driving profitable growth and enabling operational excellence. His collaborative approach and keen financial strategy insights makes him a valued partner to the IDG executive team. Additionally, Smith’s team manages all financial reporting, departmental budgets and forecasting, training on financial systems, billing, and payables.

Smith joined IDG in 1980 as a Finance Manager, where his role overlapped with operations. During this time, he managed the finances of IDG’s Peterborough, NH operations and provided guidance during the early days of high technology magazine publishing. In 1987 he was promoted to be Computerworld’s (IDG flagship brand) Senior Financial Manager based in Framingham, MA. In 2005 Smith was promoted to Vice President, Finance overseeing the financial management of IDG Communications U.S. enterprise brands. In 2009 he was again promoted to his current role, where, in addition to finance, he also oversees the diverse operations of circulation, production and facilities. During his tenure at IDG Smith has played a role in the launch of many products, services, brands and companies including the launch of the IDG TechNetwork, and the introduction of the IDG Enterprise brands to the world wide web.

Beyond IDG, Smith is a frequent speaker on his experience as a missionary in Central America from 1978-1980 and was a high school seminary teacher for 12 years. He is training to be a pilot, is learning to play the bagpipes, and enjoys spending time with his 7 grandchildren.

Smith has a Master’s degree from Cambridge College in Massachusetts.
